My new learning curve revolves around marketing/promotion. My challenge is to find readers who love sensual, fantasy romances with a touch of humour, especially ones where a devious elf pushes men and women into game-playing, love matches.
In May, 2013, The Associated Press reported that Facebook has 1.11 billion users monthly and 665 million active users daily. Facebook is a huge pool from which to find readers. Could you imagine having your posts seen by 1% of FB users, even .01%, even .001%?
I admit, I had little Facebook presence before I was published. I used it to look at my kid’s pictures when they were away from home. Whole new ballgame today. That said, I’m a fledgling. I don’t know how to best utilize my posts to find readers. So I’m trying to find out.
After my editor at Crimson Romance suggested Facebook posts that include links are not seen by as many people as posts without links, I decided to try an experiment. This makes sense because FB would rather keep you engaged within their site rather than have you follow a link to another site.
This is what I found:
First off, let me share that my author page here has 423 likes (please like my page and I’ll be happy to return the favour). My understanding is that people who like my page are more likely to see my posts.
Second, my editor was right. Although it’s difficult to do a controlled experiment on FB, I often include links in my posts, so I can scroll down my page to see that my posts with links get seen by around 25-30 people. Not many at all. But I can also see that exposure depends on how I link.
As you can see from the picture of my FB page, when my link included a drop down box, like you see in the Return To Me post on the left hand side, it didn’t get seen much – 28 people. But when my link didn’t have a drop down box, as in the post on the Wizard of Oz on the right side, it was seen by 71 people. So it’s probably a good idea to get rid of those drop down boxes. That said, there are exceptions to this rule. I posted with a drop down box that linked to an article on how writing affects the brain and this post was seen by 72 people. So perhaps FB considers the content of our posts for useful information.
When I put a link in the comments of a post, it was seen by 65 people, and this link did have a drop down box. It also had a comparable number of comments and likes, so it seems to me that perhaps links with drop down boxes are okay in the comments, but not in posts, if that makes sense.
Facebook does seem to like images, likes and comments. On the top left, is a post I did announcing the winner of a contest. I included an image of the Amazon gift card I sent to the winner. This post received 5 likes and 2 comments and was seen by 162 people.
I’ve also noticed that the number of people who see my posts increases over time. FB seems to recycle our posts? I read it’s helpful to engage others by asking questions. So I asked if readers of paranormal like it dark or light. In the first 25 minutes, this post was seen by 47 people with 1 comment and 1 like. After 1 day, it had been seen by 97 people and had 6 comments and 2 likes. Six days later the number of people had increased to 104. But this post still was not seen by as many people as the post with an image.
What about paid promotion? Facebook offers to promote any post for a cost. I tried one and capped it at $5.00. The post was seen by 1,049 people, so yes it reached many more than my usual, but I don’t believe it translated to sales.
So what’s the conclusion here? I would say that to reach as many people as we can, we should post engaging material, ask questions and post with images. Do not put links with drop down boxes in our posts.
I’m also going to see what happens if I post every day, something I’ve not done. Will FB share my posts with more people? Another goal is to like, comment and share more of my friend’s posts because we’re all in this together.
